Behavior Training and Puppy Classes

Initially we have a discussion with the Doctor about Basic Care and Husbandry of you puppy.  There are several handouts that are given on this first visit that discuss house training/crate training, and other basic concepts associate with raising a puppy.

After 2 sets of puppy vaccines, we recommend enrolling your puppy and the whole family in our Puppy Socialization and Early Learning Classes.  The focus of these classes is to on the sensitive period before 14 weeks for socialization, by providing a controlled and positive atmosphere for exploring novel experiences and interacting with other puppies and other well behaved dogs.  We also work with the owners to help them work through normal puppy issues and introduce basic obedience and manners training in a positive manner.  The classes are loosely based on Purdue University's ABC Puppy School.  These classes are being taught by Keely Harding, B.S., C.V.T, who has completed Purdue University's DOGS! Course and additional continuing education classes in behavior and training.

As you can see here, Keely is making a point with the family members about care of their puppies.  Below, we have a child introducing a puppy to the dreaded scale which wobbles and usually scares them when in the exam room.

We recommend the new Gentle Leader training collar for those dogs who are not willing to walk calmly on a leash.  This takes a little getting used to in a very short time and you will be surprised how easily you can walk an otherwise unruly dog without any pain to you or your pet!
